Audience: Mid Stage of Production - Audience Research

I am currently at the mid stage of my production with drafts of all parts of my media products complete. At this stage I was curious to see what my target audience and focus group thought about my products.

I produced a questionnaire composed of 13 questions about my documentary, poster and TV listings. I did this on Google Forms as it was the easiest way to see responses. I will post my responses in a few days time. The link to my questionnaire is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScDZ79xZMAHr0sGlQu-bGqGI_9ptivGdOski95646pxX_Pf0A/viewform?usp=sf_link#responses

These were the questions that I asked:

Production: Double Page Spread Options

Here are my different options for my double page spread. I have included a small copy about my documentary as well as a small TV listings for the time that my documentary would air. By incorporating the Channel 4 logo as well as the same title as shown in the documentary creates a brand identity and adds to the house style.

Production: Double Page Spread Images

For the design of my double page spread, I am thinking of using one portrait image on the left hand side of the page with a short article on the right hand side.

Here are some possible images I am thinking of uses:

Despite two images looking very similar, they are slightly different as they are at a slightly different angle and different lighting. I need to use portrait images for my DPS (double page spread) which means I have a more limited selection, having mostly taken images and videos landscape for my poster and documentary.

Production: Double Page Spread

I have chosen to use InDesign to produce my double page spread.

Although having used the software before, I struggled to remember how to use it and had to play around with the platform for a while. I had a small selection of photos which I wanted to use on one side of the double page spread. I decided to add 6 columns so I could space out my text accordingly and make sure my image did not take up too much space.

This screen recording below shows how I opened up a document, adding columns and inserting different image options.

Production: Adding a Logo

After reviewing my questionnaire and my audience feedback on my posters I realised the thing missing from all of them was the Channel 4 logo.  In the majority of Channel 4 posters there is a Channel 4 logo to the right hand side of the image.

.

As seen in these images, most of the time the logo is adapted to be the same colour as the text box behind the title of the documentary, I wanted to mirror this technique.

I managed to do this on Keynote on Mac. I simply found an image of the Channel 4 logo online and dragged it to my desktop. I had to make sure I downloaded a logo with a transparent background as this would have been difficult otherwise.

I then found the matching colour of my text and made into a square image which I then multiplied, cropped and moved over the top of the existing logo.

After this I used the instant alpha effect on Keynote and removed the white part of the background from the slide. I could then easily drag this onto my different options for posters and this was the end result:

I will now conduct more audience feedback to see which poster is best suited for my documentary.

Audience: Questionnaire Results

I received 23 responses to my questionnaire over a 24 hour period for my questionnaire. All those who answered this questionnaire were in my target demographic.

The questionnaire was very simple, I asked people to vote for one option out of the 10 posters I created. However, I realised this probably was not the best way to find out what people thought as my results were not shown percentage wise:

Each option showed 100% so the percentage was not effective, however I was able to see which posters got the highest amount of votes.

I had one response which had 10 results - this equates to around 44% of votes and this was the poster:

I also had 6 votes (the second highest amount) on my first option.

I like both these options and am unsure which one would best suit my documentary. Option 10 is a good photo, which has a shallow depth of focus which creates a blur in the background - making the image appear more professional. However, option 1 actually shows a bride in a wedding dress, including the shop and detailing of the back of the dress. But there is also extra people in the picture which I'm not as keen on but it could add to the realism of the picture - with the mother of the bride there with her daughter trying on dresses.

Audience: Feedback on my Ancillary Posters

I made a questionnaire via the site Google Forms which allows you to easily construct questionnaires and quizzes.

There is a link to my documentary here - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe73thzm5z0gve3hi2OJkqpCH_13oYkKYrOy87kT9SuqaEpbQ/viewform?usp=sf_link#responses

I made it very simple and had my 10 options of posters pictured on each option, asking people to choose just one of my options.

I then sent it via link to different people in my target audience - mostly women aged 16-30, the age group who I believe would be interested in watching my documentary.

Once my results have come back and I have around 20 responses, I will display my results and make a choice of poster based on this.

Production: Ancillary Poster Practice

I have been playing around with different images for my ancillary poster for my documentary which I believe would air on Channel 4. I have tried to copy the same style with the text (as shown in previous posts) and have placed the text in the bottom left hand corner (expect number 10).

Despite the generic convention having the text of the poster in the left bottom corner, I decided to change it for the last poster as due to the image, the text looked better higher up.
Next I am going to conduct a questionnaire to ask my focus group what they think and other people in my target audience.

Research : Channel 4 Font Options

I have discovered it is almost impossible to access the official Channel 4 font due to it being specifically created for the use of Channel 4. However, after reading different threads online I discovered a font called 'Etelka Monotype pro Bold' which is said to appear quite similar to the official C4 font.

I used this website to download the font to test out for my potential ancillary product.

I then decided to play around with the font a little in Keynote on Mac to see how the font would look when I typed out different words/phrases that I would need to include on my ancillary product.
