Research: Ancillary Product: Channel 4 Style Guide

For the ancillary product, I have been researched different posters and magazine listings which show documentaries and other relevant shows within my genre. I have a selection of images which I could use which I have mentioned in a previous blog post.

To ensure that my ancillary product is at a professional standard and follows the codes and conventions of a Channel 4 documentary, I have been looking into the style guide for the network. I was researching and came across this document:

This document has been created by Channel 4 and explores the use of the logo and the visual style they adopt to create their brand identity.

This screenshot shows the different conventions that Channel 4 uses - including their signature typography which typically is black or white writing with a coloured box behind - in this case orange. By analysing this advert for a show, I can make sure I use the different features correctly when creating my ancillary product.

This screenshot also shows the importance of the logo. The logo is always situated to the right hand side of an advert or other type of print media and I will make sure to mirror this.

There are also restrictions of what the logo can look like - with some rules against it shown above. I will take an image online and save it to my desktop, making sure it does not have anything shown below on it/around it.

I am also interested in the typography that Channel 4 uses and discovered they have created their own font called C4.

This font is specific to Channel 4 and audiences can easily recognise it and associate it with the channel. I am going to look into whether I am able to download this font online to use for my advert and magazine listing.

The style guide is linked here.
